BICYCLE TRANSPORTATION ON LASQUETI

Larri Woodrow, long-time part-time Lasqueti resident and seasoned trail-maker and organizer, has been encouraging the Climate Action Committee to begin to lobby the provincial government and Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure to build bicycle trails on Lasqueti, closely paralleling our road network.

We will probably never have enough electricity to use electric cars and trucks on Lasqueti, but enough  to power an electric bicycle is within most people's reach.  Riding on the road littered with potholes formed by large vehicles, and breathing their dust in dry periods seem to be the main obstacles to using bicycles to get ourselves and some of our stuff from place to place.

The province and MOTI could be convinced to begin work on bike trails, as their inducement and encouragement to us to use more bikes and fewer cars and trucks. Establishing the trails would take time and energy, but maintaining them would be less expensive, and they would be healthier all along. In the long term, it seems like a great idea.

The Climate Action Committee recommends that the LCA and the community form a committee to work on this project,  at least seeing if the idea seems like a good enough one to begin trying to get it turned into a reality.

If you'd like further information, or to express support for this idea, please let me know. You can also let me know that, and why, you don't support it if you would like. If you'd like to be a member of the committee (providing the LCA agrees with establishing it), please let me know, and attend the AGM. At the LCA AGM I will be proposing that a bicycle trail committee  be established.

Thanks to you all.   Peter
